The Asser Levy Bandshell, is located in Seaside Park in Coney Island, a block from the boardwalk. It hosts numerous events in the summer, which draw immense crowds from the surrounding densely populated apartment complexes.
The existing Bandshell was completed in the early 1970’s, and the structure was inadequate to meet present day demands. The current project, involved the expansion of the stage as well as screening of the same for protection from the elements. Besides electrical and sound system upgrades and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act were also aspects of this project. After examining the building and the surrounding context, a tensile structure was proposed over the stage extension. This created a festive, carnival like atmosphere for the outdoor events and makes the structure a focal point for the large park.
